Why Blogging Shouldn’t Be All About You

So if you have taken that next step and decided to add a blog into your marketing strategy set up your brand new blog as part of your website, now for the most important part – what do you write?

Many businesses assume that their blog is an ideal place to blow their own trumpet, highlight new products or services and generally promote themselves. If you are one of these bloggers, it might be worth stepping back and thinking first before you post reams of self-congratulatory content in a bid to increase customer awareness of your business.

An intelligent blogger will take advantage of blogging to improve their business credibility and throw their net wider by posting content that provides value to their readers.

Whether you are sharing a new trend, giving tips on choosing a particular product or posting general advice that might be useful to your prospective customers; your blog is your opportunity to establish yourself as an authority in your industry.

When you are looking for a product or service, chances are that you’ll choose someone you trust and feel you have established a relationship with and that is where blogging really gives you the chance to make your business shine.

Informative content is far more likely to be shared through social media, increasing your exposure and reputation without any additional effort on your behalf.  When you are deciding what to write, instead of making it all about you, you’re much better off making it all about your customers and what they want.

  1. Excellent point. I learned first hand that a blog shouldn’t be all about your business. Some of my non-business related posts (ex. posts about volunteering) actually gained more traffic than my business related posts.
